In the exam area Akagahara, one of the traps surrounding the statue above the red four-leaf clover, was an army of puppets. These puppets were left over from their days as obstacles in the exam area. Basic in type and severly aged, these puppets seemed to move under some hidden means, as there was no puppet master around.

Hiruko

Hiruko has been in Sasori’s arsenal for many years, and he has made modifications to it over time. These include putting more armor on a weakspot on the back, and supplementing it with a “tongue” tail. The tip of the tail drips with a deadly poison which can kill any opponent who gets hit by it.

Hyakki no Souen

These hundred puppets are said to be Sasori’s last and ultimate puppets, his “Red Secret Technique”. Made using his hitokugutsu technique, the puppets were once human who fell in battle to Sasori. Sasori would take their forms and turn them into puppets, allowing him to use their skills and abilities as their own. Many of the puppets appear to carry the weapons they once used in life. With these puppets at his side, Sasori claims to have been able to bring down a country.

Jikki Chikamatsu no Shuu

These puppets were made by the first Kugutsu no Jutsu user, Chikamatsu Monzaemon. The puppets were passed on to the hands of Hidden Sand user Chiyo. She uses the puppets as her ultimate technique, her “White Secret Technique”. The puppets are stored in a summoning scroll, when summoned each individual puppet is manipulated by one finger on each of her hands.

Below are the ten puppets and their revealed abilities. It is unknown if they possess other weapons and attacks.

The Ten Chikamatsu Puppets
Puppet One: This puppet does not appear to have any hidden weapons, instead relying on its brute strength and power to knock away attackers.

Puppet Two: This puppet does not appear to have any hidden weapons, instead it used its body in defensive maneuvers.

Puppet Three: This puppet holds a chakra sealing orb in its mouth. The mouth will open, releasing the fist-size orb. When thrown the orb increased in size to reveal that it is actually a gaping maw. This large head can bite and pin opponents to a wall, sealing their ability to use chakra.

Puppet Four (”Buddha”): This puppet bears the mark of “Buddha” in its mouth. It forms the top portion of the Sanbou Kyuukai technique. It works along side puppet six (”Acts”) and eight (”Priest”).

Puppet Five: This puppet utilizes some form of chakra-like blade. The top portion of its head will lift, to reveal a round sub-face. This face will extend four blades, which will begin to spin. This puppet works in conjunction with puppet nine.

Puppet Six: (”Dharma/Acts”) This puppet bears the mark of “Acts” in its mouth. It forms the lower left portion of the Sanbou Kyuukai technique. It works along side puppet four (”Buddha”) and eight (”Priest”).

Puppet Seven: This puppet wields large head-cleaving swords, which it can use to split enemies in twain.

Puppet Eight (”Sangha/Priest”): This puppet bears the mark of “Priest” in its mouth. It forms the lower right portion of the Sanbou Kyuukai technique. It works along side puppet four (”Buddha”) and six (”Acts”).

Puppet Nine: This puppet works in conjunction with puppet five. It can extend its right hand on a chain, to interlock with puppet fives left hand. It can then hurls puppet five and its spinning sub-face at its opponents.

Puppet Ten: This puppet holds extending cords in its skull. It can extend these piercing wires into its opponents.

Karasu

Karasu was originally built by Sasori. Karasu is the primary puppet of Kankurou, as his skills developed, he used Kuroari and Sanshouou in conjunction with it. Karasu is a puppet loaded with weapons, each limb has multiple weapons installed and ready for use.

Kuroari

Kuroari was Kankurou’s second puppet. This puppet was originally built to capture the opponent. Together with Karasu it makes a set, with Karasu leading the attacks to lead the enemy into the trap that is Kuroari. Once trapped inside Kuroari, Karasu will disassemble to extend poison blades. These blades will then by sunk into Kuroari’s holes, sending a poison death strike into the enemy trapped within.

Mokujin

The Ryuudouin clan can manipulate their wooden men using Ninpou: Mokujin Soujutsu. Their vast army of wooden training men move independently through the usage of charms placed on their heads. Because these men are “dumb” and only attack randomly, a target can easily defeat them with time. By using Mokujin Soujutsu, they can control specific puppets. This allows the puppets to better attack and defend themselves against their targets.

Sandaime Kazekage

The legendary puppet master of Hidden Sand Sasori had killed Sandaime Kazekage and then turned him into a puppet using his hitokugutsu process. Sasori kept Sandaime as his favorite and best puppet.

Sasori used his hitokugutsu to transfer his consciousness into a chest casket. This casket was then implanted into a puppetized version of his body. This body retained all his original techniques and abilities and also allowed him to bolster new offensive measure like blades and flame throwers. Sasori can open a chest compartment on his upper right torso to extend a multitude of chakra strings. He can use these strings to manipulate approximately a hundred puppets.

Kugutsu no Jutsu is a Ninjutsu technique that allows a ninja to use a puppet to attack from afar. Using their body’s chakra, the ninja emits strings of chakra that run from their fingers to the puppet. The puppet itself can be loaded with many weapons and tools, allowing the puppet master to remain hidden while the puppet moves and attacks the target.

Hitokugutsu is a Ninjutsu technique used by puppet master Sasori. This technique allows Sasori to make a puppet which can contain and use chakra. Sasori does this by making a living human into a puppet. This puppet will maintain the same chakra its original body held when alive. If the original ninja was highly skilled, its puppet can retain these abilities as well. Even the ninja unique body traits will be passed on to its puppet form. Thus Sasori can still use all the original jutsu the ninja once utilized.

Shirahigi • Jikki Chikamatsu no Shuu is a Ninjutsu technique used by puppet master Chiyo that is said to have leveled a fortress. It is said to be her ultimate technique. With this technique, Chiyo will summon ten puppets. She will manipulate one puppet with one of her fingers, so ten fingers allow her to maneuver ten puppets. These puppets were made by the first Kugutsu no Jutsu user, Chikamatsu Monzaemon. These puppets can be used to initiate techniques in their own right, such as the Sanbou Kyuukai combination, chain attack combos and hidden weapon emplacements.

Akahigi • Hyakki no Souen is a Ninjutsu technique used by puppet master Sasori that is said to have brought down a whole country. The skill of a puppet master is said to be proportional to the number of puppets they can manipulate at one time. In his puppet form, Sasori has been able to greatly increase the number of chakra strings he can emit from his body at one time. A normal puppet master like Chiyo limits herself to ten strings and puppets, focusing on quality over quantity. For Sasori, this technique goes for the brute force approach, seeking to overwhelm his opponent.

To start the technique, Sasori will remove the summoning scroll from his back. Opening his right chest compartment, he will emit approximately a hundred chakra strings to reach into the scroll and control the puppets. These puppets are former opponents of Sasori’s who he has made into hitokugutsu puppets. This allows the puppets to retain the skills and abilities they used in life. For that reason many of the puppets will retain the weapons they once used.

Kikou Junpuu is a Ninjutsu technique used by puppet masters. This shield is created when chakra is emited in the form of a disk from panels which fan out from the puppet arms. This chakra can block many deadly attacks but some attacks, such as Satetsu can gum up the puppet joints and render the arms useless.

Doku Kiri Jigoku • Baribari Hyaku Renpatsu is a Ninjutsu technique utilized by the Sand ninja Kankurou. Kankurou will use this technique while doing his Kugutsu no Jutsu. This technique involves Kankurou using both Karasu and Kuroari. Kankurou will maneuver the two puppets around his target. He will then use Karasu to launch poison mist bombs at his target, enveloping them in the gas. Karasu and Kuroari will then launch a multitude of needles at the target.

Kairai Engeki • Kuro Higi Kiki Ippatsu is a Ninjutsu technique utilized by the Sand ninja Kankurou. Kankurou will use this technique while doing his Kugutsu no Jutsu. This technique involves Kankurou’s second puppet Kuroari acting in conjunction with Karasu. Kuroari acts as a defensive puppet, capturing Kankurou’s opponents. Kankurou will use Karasu to manuever his target unknowingly into Kuroari’s opened chest. Once inside it will immediately close to prevent their escape. Acting quickly, Kankurou will break apart the limbs of Karasu, with each limb popping out a deadly poisoned knife point. These limbs will then jab into the slots of Kuroari, puncturing and killing the opponent trapped inside.

Kuro Higi Kiki Ni Hatsu is a Ninjutsu technique utilized by the Sand ninja Kankurou. Using his Kuroari puppet, Kankurou will distract his opponent in some way, either by another ninja or possibly using Karasu. With the opponent distracted, Kuroari will move into position behind them. Kankurou will open the chest cavity and emit wire to ensnare his target. They will then be pulled into the chest cavity. Blades will then run through the chest cavity carving the unfortunate soul inside to pieces.

Ninpou: Mokujin Hitsugi is a Ninjutsu technique used by the Ryuudouin clan. Using their vast army of wooden training men, the three brothers will place charms on the heads of the dummies to attack their target. When the target is sufficiently surrounded, the clan members will break the wooden men down into their base parts and then combine them into long rows. These rows will stack and combine to surround their target and isolate them from the outside world. The wooden parts will be imbued with the clan member’s chakra and be greatly strengthened as a result. If enough power is placed against the structure however, it can come crashing apart.

Fun Fact: The three treasures are the Buddha, priesthood and spirtual acts, the very kanji marking the mouths of these three puppets.

Sanbou Kyuukai is a Ninjutsu technique used by three of puppet master Chiyo’s Chikamatsu puppets. The puppets come together to form a pyramid. After forming a hand seal, a great suction will draw in all the surrounding targets to the area between their bodies. Once the sucked in materials reach this area they are broken down into nothingness in the swirling vortex.

Fuuinjutsu • Shishi Heikou is created by one of the ten Chikamatsu puppets. This seal prevents the one sealed from manipulating chakra. There are two methods for this seal.

In the first, the puppet will expel a hazy orb from its mouth which can be thrown. While flying through the air, the orb will lose it’s haze and grow in size to a huge gaping beast-like head. The large teeth can grab ahold of the person it hits and pin them to a wall. Once the it impacts the wall, it will immediately release the seal onto the surface.

In the second form, the main puppet will expel the seal from its mouth onto a surface it is touching.

Kage Guide
Out of all the shinobi countries of the world of Naruto, the five most powerful are allowed to call their leaders by the Kage (Shadow) title. These five individuals are called the “Five Kage,” they are Watershadow (Mizukage), Fireshadow (Hokage), Windshadow (Kazekage) , Earthshadow (Tsuchikage) and Lightningshadow (Raikage). The Kage are the leaders of their respective hidden villages and the ninja which inhabit their country. So far eleven Kage have had some part in the world of Naruto. They are depicted below. Warning! The listing of these Kage go through the most recent chapters of the manga. So you may see Kage who have yet to appear in your viewing of the anime.

Shodai Hokage (First Fire Shadow)

One of the founders of Leaf, Senju Hashirama helped establish the ideal of all the Hokage who followed. The Hokage serves as the foundation which Leaf village sits. The Hokage would love his village and do all in his power to protect it, even giving his life in the line of duty to ensure its survival.

Nidaime Hokage (Second Fire Shadow)

Senju Tobirama also helped in the founding of Leaf, he was the younger brother of Hashirama. Like the First Hokage, Tobirama helped establish the principle that the Hokage will die for those people precious to them.

Sandaime Hokage (Third Fire Shadow)

The Third Hokage became Hokage at a very young age. Sarutobi Hizuren was known as the Professor, a ninja with extraordinary skill and knowledge of jutsu. He would later pass on his knowledge to his students Jiraiya, Tsunade and Orochimaru. Jiraiya would then in turn pass on his knowledge to Namikaze Minato, who would become the Fourth Hokage. After the Fourth Hokage’s death, the Third came out of retirement to lead his village again.

Yondaime Hokage (Fourth Fire Shadow)

The Third Hokage first wanted Orochimaru to succeed him, but his evil ways caused Hizuren to choose Namikaze Minato instead. The Fourth Hokage was faced with a difficult challenge not long after being appointed. One of the great demons, the Kyuubi fox attacked his village. Many ninja died and the Fourth had to give his life to beat the Kyuubi and imprison him in his newborn son. His death caused the Third Hokage to come out of retirement and act as Hokage once again.

Godaime Hokage (Fifth Fire Shadow)

Though Tsunade was the granddaughter of the First Hokage and a student of the Third Hokage, she was reluctant to become the Fifth Hokage. Her boyfriend and little brother both had dreams of becoming Hokage and died while trying to further that goal. When she met Uzumaki Naruto she thought that he was also going down a foolish path, but his hard work and determination inspired her to think that becoming Hokage was a worthwhile thing.

Shodai Kazekage (First Wind Shadow)

Shodai Kazekage helped found Hidden Sand and went on to become its kage.

Nidaime Kazekage (Second Wind Shadow)

Nidaime Kazekage served as the kage of Hidden Sand.

Sandaime Kazekage (Third Wind Shadow)

The Third Kazekage was said to be the most gifted kage in Hidden Sand’s history with his ability to manipulate Iron Sand. He disappeared under mysterious circumstances right before war broke out. Years later it was revealed he was killed by expert puppet maker Sasori and turned into his most prized puppet.

Yondaime Kazekage (Fourth Wind Shadow)

The Fouth Kazekage replaced his predecessor who disappeared under myserious circumstances. He was the father of Gaara, Temari and Kankurou and he ordered the Shukaku demon be implanted into his unborn son Gaara. After falling in battle to Orochimaru, a new Kazekage was appointed to replace him.

Godaime Kazekage (Fifth Wind Shadow)

After Naruto and Jiraiya left for 2 1/2 years to train, Gaara was appointed as Fifth Kazekage of Hidden Sand. The village council appointed Gaara on the notion he was now more in control of his homicidal tendencies.

Mizukage (Water Shadow)

The Mizukage is the leader of Hidden Mist Village. It is unknown how many Mizukage there have been. When Tobi revealed his true identity as Madara to Kisame, Hoshigaki Kisame identified him as the Mizukage. Momochi Zabuza fled Hidden Mist after a failed assassination of the Mizukage. It is unknown if this was Madara, or some other Mizukage.

Raikage (Lightning Shadow)

The Raikage is the leader of Hidden Cloud Village. It is unknown how many Raikage there have been. The Raikage sought to obtain the Byakugan from Konoha, and dispatched a team to kidnap Hyuuga Hinata. The current Raikage is the brother of Killer Bee, the Eight-Tails Jinchuuriki. After his brother was captured by Akatsuki, he sought a meeting of the Five Kages to discuss dealing with Akatsuki.

Village Leader Guide
The following ninja act as their village leader. Note they are not Kages. Only the head ninja from the Five Great Shinobi Countries may use the title of “Kage”. The individuals thus operate under their real name only.

Akahoshi [Hidden Star]

Akahoshi replaced the Third “Hoshikage” after his sudden death. The position of “Kage” within Hidden Star has not been recognized by the Five Great Shinobi Nations. Most in the village believe the usage of the chakra enhancing meteor will make the village powerful enough to be on equal footing with the other five nations. With the death of Akahoshi and the destruction of the meteor, the use of “Kage” will probably end. It is currently unknown who is leading the village.

Hanzou [Hidden Rain]

Hanzou acted as the leader of Hidden Rain for a number of years. When civil war broke out, the rebel leader Pain killed Hanzou and took control of the country.

Pain [Hidden Rain]

Though he acts as the leader of Akatsuki, Pain also led the Hidden Rain rebel ninjas in their civil war against their home village. Pain used his skills to eventually take out Hanzou.

Kazahana Dotou [Hidden Snow]

After having his brother the Daimyou of the Snow Country killed, Dotou formed Hidden Snow and sought enough power to defeat the Five Great Shinobi Countries. He was eventually killed and Hidden Snow’s future is unclear.

Orochimaru [Hidden Sound]

Forced to flee Hidden Leaf because of his forbidden experiments, Orochimaru went north and gathered many despondent ninja and clans. With his identity hidden, he formed Hidden Sound and set out to destroy Konoha once and for all.

Shibuki’s Father [Hidden Waterfall]

This man served as the head of Hidden Waterfall in the past. When Waterfall came under foreign attack, he ingested the village’s Hero water. Unfortunately he wasn’t young enough to survive the effects of the water and he passed away shortly afterwards. His son Shibuki took over as Hidden Waterfall leader after his passing.

After his father died, Shibuki took control of Hidden Waterfall. Shibuki was unprepared for the role early on, but eventually he accepted his position and strove to do all he could to protect his village.

Mission Guide

In addition to acting as the army for their country, the ninja village also acts as a business. Each day clients will come to the village and pay for the services of the ninja. These jobs can range from the mundane (walk the feudal lord’s dog), to the assassination of deadly wanted criminals. As needed the Kage or Jounin master of a Genin team can assign missions in furtherance of a duty to the country that are unpaid.

These jobs are thus divided into difficulty ranks of S, A, B, C and D and then given to ninja based on their ability. If the mission is completed successfully, the client will then pay the village. The easiest and least deadly jobs are given to the Genin, these are called “D-Rank”. The D-Rank missions also help to build teamwork skills among the new Ninja Academy graduates. D-Rank are therefore non-combat with low pay. The “C-Rank” missions will be given to Chuunin and skilled Genin. These include protective escorts and missions with some chance of bodily harm. It can include capturing wild animals and mine clearing. “B-Rank” missions will be given to Special Jounin and Chuunin. These also include protective escort, gathering foreign intelligence and killing of ninja. Open battle is generally not an issue during this mission type. The next highest rank missions, “A-Rank” are given to Jounin and Special Jounin. These include vital missions between nations, escorting VIPs and maneuvers against offensive ninja forces. Thus these missions will almost always involve combat and risk of death. At the highest and most dangerous is “S-rank”, given to Jounin. These missions include assassination of important persons, transporting classified documents and materials. With the extreme danger comes a very high rate of pay.

Lost Pet “Tora” Search Mission [Official]

Though the Leaf ninja eventually tracked him down, a bounty hunter named Sazanami caught him first and turned him over to authorities.

While on the mission, Tsunade also assigned Naruto several other D rank missions, including picking up trash, repairing a bridge and getting rid of an unruly boar.

Treasure Hunt Training [Unofficial]

Upon completing the mission, they learned that it was all a test, to see how well they worked as a team since they failed many of their previous missions together.

Retrieve Gaara from Akatsuki [Official]
